Chemical Structure: Iron (III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex (IPC) is a water-soluble complex consisting of iron (III)-hydroxide cores surrounded non-covalently by polymaltose (partially hydrolyzed dextrin), with a molecular weight of around 52,300 Daltons.
Mechanism & Properties: Its large macromolecular size reduces mucosal membrane diffusion compared to standard iron (II) salts. The complex remains stable without releasing ionic iron under normal body conditions, mimicking the structure of natural ferritin.
Folic Acid Role: Essential for red blood cell formation, assisting in the transition of megaloblasts into normoblasts.
Key Benefits over Ionized Iron:
Avoids intestinal mucosal irritation and does not cause tooth staining.
Features a pleasant flavor (chewable tablets are chocolate-flavored).
Exhibits high patient tolerance and rapid absorption for hemoglobin synthesis.
Therapy for latent iron deficiency as well as iron deficiency anemia.
Prevention of iron and folic acid deficiencies prior to, during, and following pregnancy (including throughout lactation).
Prophylactic treatment for iron deficiency to meet recommended daily dietary allowances (RDA).
